Message to Our Voting Members: Make Sure Your Colleagues Pay Their Fair Share
Dear Voting AAUP-BHSNJ Member,
Recently, the Supreme Court released a decision on a politically motivated case; this will be very harmful to our Union. This decision will allow some of your colleagues--who are not Voting Members--to earn a free ride, without contributing any funds to pay for the benefits the union provides.
There are two kinds of faculty covered by our collective bargaining agreement, 1) those Voting Members like yourself who pay union dues of $26 a pay period, and 2) Non-Voting Members who pay automatically a "fair share" fee of $22.10 a pay period (this compensates for the benefits we are legally obligated to provide)
However, due to Janus v AFSCME, we are no longer permitted to charge this fair share fee to Non-Voting Members. If we do not have a sufficient number of faculty paying into our organization, this will jeopardize our ability to fight with you.
The revenue we generate from both these groups goes to maintain a staff and office, which negotiates and enforces our collective bargaining agreement. Since 1970, this agreement has provided for better economic benefits like:
- pay increases
- enhanced pension matches
- tuition remission
- clinical incentives
- research extramural incentives
- patent royalty distributions
We have also significantly improved:
- appointment and promotion policies
- workload schemes
- clinical schedules
- non-compete clauses
As the Administration launches into the a 20-year, multi-billion dollar privatization deal with RWJBH, we are the ones who have asked the tough questions and continuously pressed the Chancellor on your concerns.
But the Union is more than your advocate, it is a vision of a better future, where all faculty can express themselves and work without fear of retaliation or bullying. We can build that culture that attracts and cultivates the best and the brightest.
We have a long way to go, and we need your engagement. We appreciate your support and membership in building the Rutgers we all deserve. You can do your part by reaching out to your colleagues and asking them to pay their fair share as Voting Members.
