What is AAUP-BHSNJ?
AAUP-BHSNJ is both the collective bargaining agent that negotiates the wages and working conditions of faculty and librarians employed at 50% or more of full-time by the University, and the professional organization that works to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good.
What is collective bargaining at BHSNJ?
Collective bargaining is a process in which representatives from the AAUP bargaining unit (faculty and librarians) and representatives from the University interact and negotiate wages, terms, and conditions of employment. This process results in a legally binding agreement that cannot be unilaterally changed, but may be changed in whole or in part if the parties mutually agree to renegotiate the agreement. When a negotiated agreement is reached, the parties, by definition, mutually accept the results.
The following are a few of the benefits of collective bargaining in higher education:
Greater involvement in the decision-making process--a strengthening of shared governance.
Clearly defined conditions of employment that minimize uncertainty and ambiguity. Disputes resolved through a timely, fair, and effective grievance procedure.
A negotiated agreement that is stable, secure, and legally binding. Terms negotiated in a faculty collective bargaining agreement reflect faculty concerns and shared decision-making. These terms cannot be changed unilaterally and without faculty and librarian participation. Legislative advocacy, lobbying, presence and pressure.

As of July 1, 2013, based on the integration of SOM with Rowan University and the integration of the remaining units of the former UMDNJ with Rutgers University (as per the New
Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act as of 2012) AAUP-UMDNJ became AAUP-BHSNJ.
Faculty and Librarians of the former UMDNJ at both Rutgers and Rowan (and those hired into units of the former UMDNJ) are now part of the Biomedical and Health Sciences of New Jersey American Association of University Professors unit, AAUP-BHSNJ.
