Dear Faculty,
We would like to update you in a few areas.

Workload Grievance Filed
Last month, our union filed a grievance alleging the University has impermissibly
increased workload and the hours of work without bargaining with our union.
There have been a number of ways this has happened from adding clinic sessions,
arbitrary increases to cFTE, and implementing unobtainable wRVU goals to mention
a few. For our teaching faculty, the University has loaded up classes across the
board. We are pushing back. Should we win the grievance, we can prevent these
abuses from happening in the future and make faculty whole the best we can.
There is a fundamental principle that people should not be forced to work without
pay, as happens when people have to do EMR work, scholarship work, etc on their
“own” unpaid time or have to cover new clinical sites without increased pay. Our
union intends to fully fight for that principle.
CINJ FVS
We also filed a grievance concerning the 25% pay cap on the Fully Variable
Supplements at CINJ. The addition of these caps has cost faculty thousands of
dollars and they were not a feature of the agreement we signed concerning the
addition of these FVS components. The University cannot create its own rules
whenever it wants. It is unfortunate that they harming this compensation tool that
has helped retain CINJ faculty.
Professional Development Funds Available
Did you know there is $350,000 per fiscal year available in our union contract? This
can be used for members who have no access to professional development funds
through their department. Although members have put in their expense
information, more money is available in this benefit. This year’s money will not be
available after June 30. The money will become available again in the new fiscal
year – so request reimbursement this year and again after! Requests can be up to
$1000 and can be used for CME related expenses, licensure fees, hospital privilege
costs, conference fees and other academic expenses. If you are interested, please
email membership@aaupbhsnj.org. Include the amount, what is being requested,
when the expense was incurred. Please be sure to keep any receipts and other
documentation related to the expense. We have 60 faculty that have put in so we
have ways to do to spend this money before June 30th.
Make Sure You Are Heard on the Medical School Merger.
